What comes in a standard porta potty?

A standard porta potty has a toilet seat over a 60-gallon waste tank, a urinal, a toilet paper holder with spare rolls, a hand sanitizer dispenser, a coat hook, roof vents and a door lock with an occupied sign. The translucent roof lets in daylight, so there is no light inside.

When is a standard unit the wrong choice?

A standard porta potty is the wrong choice for a formal wedding, for guests who use wheelchairs, or for events with food but no hand wash station. Wedding hosts usually prefer a flushing unit or a restroom trailer. Public events need at least one ADA unit by law.

For food events, pair every 2 standard units with a hand wash station. For guests who use walkers or wheelchairs, add an ADA unit. For nicer events, compare the deluxe flushing unit.

Where can a standard porta potty go?

A standard porta potty goes on any flat, firm spot the driver can reach with a hand dolly: a driveway, a side yard, a gravel pad or a level lawn. The spot should be within about 50 feet of where the truck can park, with no steps in the way.

  • Keep the door facing away from the street or the neighbors' windows.
  • Leave 10 feet from grills, fire pits and tents.
  • On grass in summer, a shaded spot keeps odor down.
  • On a slope, we level the unit with boards so it cannot tip.

More advice is in the porta potty placement guide.

Standard porta potty: questions before you book

How many people can use one standard porta potty?

One standard porta potty serves about 50 guests at a 4-hour event, or 10 workers over a 40-hour week with one weekly cleaning. The waste tank holds about 200 uses before it needs a pump-out.

Does a standard porta potty have a sink?

A standard porta potty has a hand sanitizer dispenser but no sink. Units with a small foot-pump sink inside are available for jobsites. For events with food, add a separate hand wash station.

Is there a light inside?

A standard unit has no electric light. The translucent roof lights it during the day. For evening parties, hang a battery tap light or a small lantern inside.

Can you lock it overnight?

Each unit has a hasp for a padlock. A combination lock can be added free on request, which keeps a backyard or jobsite unit private when you are not there.

Do you have pink or different colored units?

Units come in blue, gray and pink, depending on what is on the lot that week. Ask for a color when you book and the dispatcher will set one aside if it is free.

Will it smell?

A freshly serviced unit has a blue deodorizing treatment in the tank. In July and August heat, place it in shade and book weekly service, or twice-weekly service for heavy use.
