How many accessible units does an event need?

An event needs at least 5% of the porta potties in each cluster to be accessible, with a minimum of 1. That rule is section 213.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards. So 1 to 20 units need 1 ADA unit, 21 to 40 units need 2, and 41 to 60 units need 3.

Minimum accessible units per cluster (5%, rounded up)
Units in one clusterAccessible units required
1–201
21–402
41–603
61–804
81–1005

Read the rule in the U.S. Access Board guide to toilet rooms. Units used only by construction workers are exempt. This is general information, not legal advice. Confirm the count with your event permit office or venue.

What makes the unit accessible?

The accessible unit has a level floor at ground height, a door about 36 inches wide, and a clear 60-inch-diameter turning circle inside. Grab bars sit beside and behind the seat. The seat is lower than a standard unit, and the door closes slowly so it does not catch a wheelchair.

Accessible means usable by a wheelchair user. Whether the setup meets the ADA also depends on the route to the unit: firm, level ground with no curbs, cables or soft mud. Plan that path when you mark the spot.

Who rents an ADA unit besides public events?

Families rent ADA units for parties with grandparents who use walkers, for guests recovering from surgery, and for a parent with a stroller and toddler. Jobsites rent them for supervisors and inspectors. The extra floor space also makes changing clothes easier at sports tournaments.

Pair each ADA unit with a hand wash station, since the turning space leaves no room for a sink inside.

ADA unit: questions before you book

What is the difference between an ADA unit and a handicap porta potty?

Both terms usually mean the same unit. Some companies call a slightly larger standard unit "handicap," but only a unit with ground-level entry, grab bars and a 60-inch turning space is built for a wheelchair. Ask for the ADA unit by name.

Does the ADA porta potty have a sink?

The ADA unit has a sanitizer dispenser but no sink, because the turning space fills the floor. Add a hand wash station next to it for food events.

Is an ADA unit required at my private backyard party?

The ADA rule applies to public events and places of public accommodation. A private party has no legal requirement. Many hosts still add one for older guests or anyone with mobility needs.

Can the ADA unit go on grass?

The ADA unit can go on firm, flat grass. On soft or sloped ground, the floor can tilt and the step-free entry is lost. A driveway or patio is the safer spot.

How far ahead should I book an ADA unit?

Book ADA units 2 to 3 weeks ahead for spring and summer weekends, and earlier for festivals. Same-day ADA delivery is possible when a unit is on the lot.

Do jobsites need an ADA unit?

Units used only by construction workers are exempt from the 5% rule. Contractors still add one when an inspector, client or worker needs the space.
